The movement was popular in Germany among World War I veterans who felt betrayed by communist/socialists in Germany. National Socialism as we know it is anti-Jewish totalitarianism but it was really created to be violently anti-marxist (Hitler perceived jews to be the major players in marxism). It prevented any real political or military attempt to unify east and west germany. National Socialists weren't allowed to legally meet We defeated the Nazis and not you Germans! Thus they banned the party and all imagery associated with it. When the Marshall plan finally was implemented the best way to end the war/violence was to also kill off any German nationalism that would motivate German partisans such as the Werwolf movement. Hitler was a well liked politician before 1939. The US mostly wanted to be neutral, and FDR campaigned on Neutrality, granted the NS government declares war on the US but FDR's government was antagonizing Germany and supplying her enemies which isn't really 'neutral'. Britain was losing for a while and Hitler made many peace overtures in this period. The allies also used a lot of anti-nazi propaganda to fuel public opinion about the war. There were factions in the west that were anti-communist and didn't like how much ground the USSR had gained. After the war there was a legitimate concern about National Socialist movements attempting to create partisan violence. Computer games are a very important medium and it should be addressed as such and its possibilities for giving proper context and information should not be lost, because "hitler", because basically that is their argument.
